Family Holidays in Somerset

Although we don’t have as many holiday parks in Somerset as we do for Devon holidays or Cornwall holidays, we still think that Somerset is a great place to enjoy a stay in a John Fowler caravan park. The county has a lot to offer, whether you’re looking for fun by the sea or want to explore the many inland cities, attractions and landscapes.

Starting at the coast, there are some great beaches for you to visit during a holiday in Somerset. You’ll find huge arrangements of sand dunes that your children are guaranteed to love playing on, and the long, sandy beaches that stretch from these towards the ocean are perfect for playing a whole variety of beach games on, or building sandcastles, or just sunbathing! A whole family can enjoy a day out at one of Somerset’s beaches. You’ll also find that the water doesn’t get as cold and isn’t as unpredictable as the water around some coasts, though you should be aware that tides move up and down a huge amount; the Bristol Channel has a greater difference between its high and low watermarks than anywhere else in the world! It’s a great place for anybody to enjoy a beach holiday, and if that’s what you’re after then we’re sure you’ll find it perfect.

If you can drag yourself away from the beach (and during sunny weather, this might be very difficult), then you can begin to discover some of the other things that Somerset has to offer. Just up the coast from our Sandy Glade Holiday Park is Bristol, a perfect day out for any members of your family that enjoy their shopping. Or you could head to one of the cinemas or other attractions that Bristol has. Just because you’re holidaying by the sea, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a little metropolitan luxury!

If you’d like to head to some of Somerset’s attractions for a family day out, then you’ll be pleased to know that the county has all sorts of excellent destinations available to you and caters to many different tastes. People interested in history and architecture will love visiting Bath, or taking a trip to see Wells Cathedral. Bath is full of exquisite Georgian architecture, all made from the golden-coloured Bath Stone which was quarried nearby. Wells Cathedral is famous for its facade, which has elements from many different styles and periods of architecture due to it being repeatedly added to throughout the centuries. Bath is also famous for its Roman heritage, and any body wanting to learn about that won’t be disappointed.

For a little theatre, music or comedy, both Bath and Bristol should be your destinations of choice. Bath especially has a long heritage of cultural activity. Be it the annual theatre, comedy and music festivals or the year-round gigs and shows that you can turn up to, there’s sure to be something going on that you’ll find enjoyable. If you’d like an evening out to enjoy a show then you’ll also be glad to hear that both Bath and Bristol have many excellent restaurants and bars for you to head to.

There’s yet another face of Somerset to discover, separate from both the cities and the coast, and that’s the beautiful countryside. Whether you’re wandering through the Somerset Levels as a fog builds, or standing on top of Glastonbury Tor looking out at the surrounding fields and patches of woodland, there’s a lot to enjoy about the county. You can also enjoy all of it in plenty of different ways. Look up a local stable and find out about some guided rides through the landscape, or choose one of the many footpaths or cycle paths that snake through the county, offering some wonderful views and a fresh new perspective of the county.
