The Ruda Holiday Park estate (which includes Croyde beach) is part of the North Devon Unesco Biosphere Reserve and part of the the only World Surf Reserve in the UK. It is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and an Inshore Marine Conservation Zone.
Energy
We are committed to saving energy, steps we have taken are:
- We operate on a green energy tariff
- We utilise low energy light bulbs
- We use sensor operated lighting wherever possible
- When replacing appliances, we opt for A rated appliances
- Our caravans are fitted with thermostatic heating controls
- All of our new accommodation comes with domestic style insulation and double glazing
We encourage our guests to follow our energy saving tips of turning off lights when they leave their accommodation and turning down heating.
Sustainability
We want to promote sustainable tourism for the benefit of the future generation of holidaymakers. As a responsible holiday park we are committed to:
- Informing our guests on single use plastics. We provide information to our guests about this via the app and big screen broadcasts.
- We have a green charter on display giving 3 tips on how they can 'Go Green on Holiday'.
- We have a company-wide environmental policy which is on our website. All new employees are made aware of this.
- We encourage our suppliers to minimise packaging. All of the brochures sent out from head office are sent in biodegradable plastic wallets or paper envelopes.
- Taps in public buildings are on a push tap systems to avoid wastage.
- We utilise water loggers to identify leaks and conserves resources.
- Our toilets have duel flush to save water.
- We have converted all cleaning products to a complete dosage delivery system to reduce waste and over use.
- We have a responsible purchasing policy.
- We have a dedicated Green Champion on park to promote ecologically friendly practices.
- We use electric vehicles on the park
- We installed solar panels on our touring building as a source of renewable energy
- We have 2 EV charging points on the park
Recycling & Waste
We aim to minimise the amount of waste we send to landfill. We have taken the following steps:
- We have dry mixed recycling facilities throughout the site
- We have dedicated bottle banks throughout the site. Glass recycling uses less energy than making new glass products, which in turn reduces the strain on raw materials and resources.
- We offer food recycling. Food waste is used to produce both energy and high quality compost.
- All of our used cooking oil is collected to make greener fuel.
- Unused toilet rolls are donated to staff.
- We separate out DMR, glass and food waste from general waste and encourage our guests to recycle as much as possible
Carbon Offset
We aim to minimise our carbon footprint. We offer incentives to guests travelling by public transport to provide free cot and highchair hire. We offset the paper used in marketing literature with a tree planting scheme.
Wildlife & the Beach
- We hold regular beach cleans with the local community
- We are actively restoring the sand dunes in consultation with Natural England
- We have beach recycling points. Beach toys and deck chairs can be borrowed and re-used. Over 350 broken bodyboards are stripped and used for various projects each year in association with Keep Britain Tidy's Wave of Waste campaign
- Our lakes are a county wildlife site managed as a Wildlife Reserve
- We have wildflower banks running through our amenity grassland which provide a cruicial wildlife corridor
- We create smaller habitats for wildlife including mini ponds, bird boxes, bat boxes, deadwood hedges, hedgehog houses and hibernaculums
- We have access to our own groundwater supply via a bore hole.
Community
- We support and promote our local community
- We employ local people and trades people
- We run environmental sessions with a range of local schools and groups
- Where possible we source local produce to be used in our bar, food outlets and stocked in our shop
Charity Work
- We partnered with Access for All to help make Croyde beach one of the most accessible beaches in the UK
- We hold charity event days to raise money for The Wave Project
- We support the Baggy Bluetit Cold Water Swimming Group
- We sponsor professional surfer, Malakai Hagley, as he continues to develop his career in surf compeitions across the world
- We are members of the Marine Conservation Society and South West Coastal Path Association
- We hold 'Bingo Beats' games whereby 50% of the takings are donated to charities and good causes.
- Every year we donate free holidays to local charitable causes for auction
Office
- We have reduced the number of printed marketing leaflets by combining them with our park maps so all information is in a single printed format
- Our park maps are printed on recycled paper using ecologically-friendly inks
- Local information is supplied on the app to reduce paper usage
- We have employed a print-stop-think policy across the company
- All booking confirmations are sent electronically where possible
