The Caravan turns 100 years old
This year marks the 100th birthday of the caravan, that home from home we all know and love and that you enjoy when you visit one of our holiday parks. While they have not always looked how they do today, they have always been at the heart of family holidays in the UK and around the world.
The first commercial touring caravan hit the market in 1919 and even though today we think of them as a great way to have a cheap UK break, they were originally only for the most privileged.
Luckily in 1937 the 'car cruiser' was invented, it could be towed behind a motor car and was crucially more affordable. This changed the market completely and although production stopped during the war, post war the industry boomed as families all over wanted to spend more time exploring our beautiful country.
As the industry grew so did the facilities available inside caravans, and now we see flat screen TV's, Dishwashers, MP3 players and washing machines inside some of our Platinum caravans. A far cry from the pre war models that included a bed made of wood, a small table and no electricity!
Why not book a holiday at one of our beachside caravan parks in Somerset, Devon or Cornwall and experience the wonders of a caravan for yourself, and see why it is still one of the most popular ways to holiday in the UK.
Here at John Fowler Holidays we have always been a big fan of the caravan, so from everyone here we want to wish it a very happy 100th birthday!
