Could Newquay Airport become UK’s first spaceport?
Thousands and thousands of people enjoy caravan holidays in Cornwall every year, but soon the county could be offering a different kind of escape...to space!
Newquay Airport, not far from Perran View Holiday Park, has been shortlisted as a possible site for the UK's first commercial spaceport.
The airport is the only English site being considered, with 6 from Scotland and another from Wales also on the shortlist.
Plans to build the spaceport were announced at Farnborough airshow and show ambitious signs of transforming the UK into a leading space nation.
The facility would house rockets and space planes to carry satellites, astronauts and even tourists into space â image that, Freddy in space, you might even be able to wave me off from our Cornwall holiday parks.
Newquay's airport has a real chance of being chosen with its coastal location, unrestricted airspace and one of the UK's longest runways â all attractive features.
The 8 shortlisted sites are:
Campbeltown Airport
Glasgow Prestwick Airport
Kinloss Barracks
RAF Lossiemouth
RAF Leuchars
Stornoway Airport
Newquay Cornwall Airport
Llanbedr Airport
