Dog-friendly holidays in the South West this summer
There’s nothing quite like a coastal escape during summer—with the sea breeze, golden sand, and the joy of exploring with your furry best friend. But if you're planning a beach holiday with your dog near our parks this summer, it’s important to be aware of seasonal restrictions, as many beaches have dog bans during peak months. Don’t worry—we’ve gathered all the essential info to help you and your dog enjoy the coast this holiday!
Summer restrictions for dogs on beaches
Between 1st May and 30th September, many popular UK beaches restrict or ban dogs during the day to keep shores clean for all visitors. These restrictions vary from full bans to partial access (such as dog-friendly zones or evening hours only), so it's important to plan ahead.
To make your life easier, here’s a guide to dog-friendly beaches near our parks in North Devon and Cornwall—including beaches with restricted and unrestricted access.
North Devon dog-friendly beaches

-
Putsborough Sands – Dogs are welcome on the northern end of the beach.
-
Crow Point – A peaceful, less crowded beach ideal for off-lead fun.
-
Mouthmill Beach – Remote and scenic, great for adventurous dogs.
-
Hele Bay – Small cove near Ilfracombe that welcomes dogs all year.
Restricted in Summer (1 May – 30 Sept)
-
Woolacombe Beach – Dogs are banned from the central zone, but the northern section is dog-friendly (signposted).

Dog-friendly all year round

-
Watergate Bay – Spacious beach, always dog-friendly.
-
Holywell Bay – No restrictions, plenty of space.
-
Mawgan Porth – Dogs welcome year-round.
-
Trebarwith Strand – Dogs allowed at all times, but best to visit at low tide for extra space.
-
Daymer Bay – Quiet and dog-friendly all year round.
Restricted in Summer (1 July – 31 August, 10am–6pm)
These restrictions are typically in place under the Cornwall Council PSPO (Public Spaces Protection Order):

Polzeath

Widemouth Bay (main beach)
-
Porth Beach (Newquay)
Good news: Many of these beaches are often still dog-friendly in the early mornings and evenings.
Summer safety tips for dogs on the beach
While beaches can be the perfect playground, summer heat can pose risks for dogs. Here are some tips to keep tails wagging safely:
Hydration is key
Always bring fresh water and a portable bowl. Saltwater isn’t safe to drink and can make your dog sick.
Provide shade
Pack a beach umbrella or pop-up tent so your dog has a cool place to rest. Sand gets hot quickly!
Protect paws
If the sand or tarmac is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for paws. Walk in the early morning or evening to avoid heat.
Don’t overdo it
Limit exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Watch for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.
Be cautious with sunscreen
Some breeds (especially short-haired or fair-skinned dogs) may need pet-safe sunscreen on their noses and ears. Consult with your vet if you're concerned.
Avoid hazards
Watch out for jellyfish, sharp shells, or washed-up fish that curious dogs may sniff or eat. Keep them far away from wildlife, such as seals and nesting birds.
