English National Surfing Championships 3-5 May 2014
Well, I know how I'll be spending any time off from the Foxy Club this bank holiday weekend! And I can't think of more exciting event to take in from your beachside holiday park.
The English National Surfing Championships, one of Europe's longest standing surfing competitions, returns to Cornwall 3-5 May for its 42nd year.
The UK's best surfers will descend on Watergate Bay, just 20 minutes from Perran View Holiday Park, in a battle to become the English Champion.
Russell Winter currently holds that title after returning to the competition in style last year! I'm still gutted I missed it in such perfect conditions, I was busy elsewhere at John Fowler's holiday parks UK. Keshia Eyre will be hoping to defend her Women's title too, after such an impressive display in 213.
Mark Harris, my favourite English surfer and Cornish local, came third in last year's Men's Open. He said: âThe English Nationals is the first event of the year so everyone's been training all winter. I've been surfing lots of spots that don't usually break, because of the abnormally large swells, so it's been a good winter to be at home.
âLast year the standard in the final was so high and Russell just beat me to it. I've got some new surfboards coming from my sponsor Quiver so hopefully I'll get a good start to the tour.â
âI've always wanted to win the English Nationals as it's got so much history behind it. It is exciting to compete against the best surfers in Britain at my home break at Watergate Bay.â
Champions will be crowned across 14 categories, which include Open, Ladies, Masters, Veterans and Junior divisions.
Hopefully the weather is kind and the 4-6ft swell on Thursday and Friday carry into the weekend â I want to see the surfers ripping!
