Fun facts you didn’t know about Cornwall

It’s no secret that Cornwall is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK. With white sandy beaches and turquoise clear waters it’s no real surprise! But how well do you know Cornwall?

We’ve got some eyebrow-raising facts that you may not have known. And if you did, well award yourself a pasty!

How many beaches?!

Cornwall’s beautiful beaches are perhaps its biggest draw. But did you know there are over 300 of them to choose from? So no need to panic, there’ll be plenty of space to put down your towels and soak up some sun.

Surf’s up, up UP!

Some of the waves on Cornwall’s beaches can reach over 25ft! That’s taller than a house! Experienced surfers get ready.

The humble pasty

The crust of a Cornish pasty was never meant to be eaten. Pasties were the staple of miners' lunches. The crust formed an important handle so as not to get dirt from their hands in their mouths . The crust was then discarded after their meal. Now, with hopefully cleaner hands, it’s one of the best parts of the traditional food item!

Outstanding natural beauty

30% of Cornwall’s countryside is recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With it’s strong feature in the film, Salt Path, it’s not hard to see why. From moor to clifftop, Cornwall has a truly diverse landscape that visitors are desperate to explore.

Dydh da!

Meaning, ‘hello’ in Cornish. Cornwall has its own language, which only gained official government recognition in 2002 despite it predating English.
