Fun facts you (probably) didn’t know about Devon

Devon isn’t just rolling hills, sandy beaches, and cream teas (although, honestly, those are worth the trip alone). This fantastic county is bursting with surprises. So grab a cuppa (cream first, jam second—Devon rules!) and dive into these fun facts you probably (maybe) didn’t know about Devon!

The narrowest street

Welcome to Parliament Street in Exeter — a street so skinny, you might have to hold your breath to get through it. At its narrowest point, it’s just 0.64 metres wide. That’s less than the width of your average fridge. Locals say if two people enter from opposite ends, one of you will have to reverse!

The cream tea debate

The question that divides a nation: Jam or cream first? In Devon, it’s cream first, jam second — because apparently, putting jam first is “utter madness.” (Looking at you, Cornwall!)

Jack Russells are from Devon

The adorable, feisty Jack Russell Terrier was born right here in Devon! The breed’s founder, Reverend John Russell of Dartmouth, wanted a dog that could keep up with his hunting trips. He ended up creating one of the world’s most energetic (and cheekiest) pups.

Home to the last castle ever built in England

Castle Drogo — built between 1911 and 1931, is the youngest castle in England. It’s perched dramatically above the Teign Gorge like something out of a fantasy film.

Europe’s oldest cinema is in Torquay!

Torbay Picture House opened its doors in 1914, making it one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas in Europe. Charlie Chaplin could’ve watched his own films here.

Puffins, roads & the green flag

Lundy Island (off Devon’s coast) has more puffins than people. A lot more! Devon also has more miles of road than any other county in England — over 8,000! And yes, Devon even has its own flag: green, black, and white, named after local saint St Petroc.
