Has North Devon surfer surfed record breaking wave?

Yo, Freddy here!

Did anyone see that monster wave being surfed on the news?!

If you have, and regularly visit North Devon on your self catering holidays, you may recognise world record breaking surfer Andrew Cotton. During the summer he lifeguards on Croyde beach, keeping an eye on beginner surfers like me!

On Sunday, he took to the surf himself riding what could be the biggest wave ever surfed – breaking his own record set just 3 months ago!

The wave again came in Nazaré, Portugal. It was estimated to have reached 80ft, which would beat his previous record by 2ft. Cotton surfed the wave for 10 seconds before it caught up on him and wiped him out…gnarly!

Cotton will now have to wait until March to hear if he has set a new world record, Billabong XXL will make the final ruling.

He said: "It was massive that morning and I knew there was potential to catch record-breaking waves,"

"As I turned around I looked at it and it was obviously a big wave, but I didn't realise how big it was going to be.

"There was obviously a bout of nerves."

If there are ever waves that big in North Devon I think I'll stay in the safety of my chalet at Ilfracombe Holiday Park, rather than take to the surf!
