Cornwall:
Jamaica Inn
Situated in the middle of Bodmin Moor, a hotspot for highwaymen and foul play in the 16th century, this old coach house is alleged to be one of the most haunted places in Britain. Guests claim to have been disturbed by a poltergeist – a highwayman who can walk through locked doors and throws objects in his rage. Others claim to have seen an anguished mother and her baby, and a young smuggler who walks the courtyard at night, endlessly searching for something.
The Inn is less than an hour’s drive from Widemouth Bay Caravan Park, Trelawne Manor, Killigarth Manor, and Perran View Holiday Parks.
Bodmin Jail
Built in the late 1700s Bodmin Jail is renowned for its dark history. Famous for its public hangings, the jail saw the grisly end of many wrong-doers throughout its time with the belief that those souls became imprisoned forever within the jail. Visitors are able to explore the jail itself and read about the inmates that inhabited the cells in the cold and gloomy underground passages.
The jail is just over half an hour’s drive from Killigarth Manor Holiday Park and Trelawne Manor Holiday Park, and just under an hour from Widemouth Bay caravan Park and Perran View Holiday Park.
Tintagel Castle
With strong mythical associations to King Arthur, Tintagel’s castle ruins are steeped in haunted history. The ghost of Merlin is thought to haunt the dark cave beneath the headland on which the castle sits. At the nearby Camelot Castle Hotel, guests have reported being woken in the night by poltergeist activity. A figure has been reported to have been seen walking the path from the hotel to his cottage – a previous employee who died more than 70 years ago.
The castle is around half an hour’s drive from Widemouth Bay Caravan Park, and just over an hour from Trelawne Manor, Killigarth Manor and Perran View Holiday Parks.
Somerset:
Wookey Hole caves
The legend of the witch of Wookey Hole is the backbone of this spooky family attraction. The Witch of Wookey Hill is a human-shaped stalagmite, which legend says was once an evil witch turned to stone by a Glastonbury monk. The witch’s ghost is said to roam the tunnels within the caves, seeking her revenge.
The caves are just under an hour’s drive from our Sandy Glade and Sandy Meadows Holiday Parks.
Glastonbury Tor
Famous for its spiritual connections for Pagans and Christians alike, it’s no surprise that the Tor has a supernatural draw. The tower atop the tor was the site of the execution of Abbot Richard Whiting in 1549. Legend also tells of the tower as being a doorway to the dead with reports of the sound of hounds howling at night, searching for souls to drag back through the door.
Glastonbury is just over half an hour’s drive from our Sandy Glade and Sandy Meadows Holiday Parks.
Wales:
Roch Castle
Legend has it that the original castle owner, Adam de Rupe was prophesised by a witch to die by snake bite within the year. Determined to prove her wrong, Rupe built the castle and hid within the top floor to wait out the year. In the winter months he ordered a servant to bring him firewood, in which a snake is said to have been hiding. Rupe died following a bite from the snake and his ghost is said to roam the top floors of the castle ever since. Visitors have claimed to have seen orbs and experienced minor paranormal activity within the old castle.
Roch Castle is just under an hour’s drive from Cardigan Bay Holiday Park.
