Ilfracombe brings home gold in South West in Bloom Awards

Visitors to Ilfracombe Holiday Park this year may have taken note of the impressive and colourful floral displays around the town.

It wasn't just the eyes of those on UK weekend breaks they caught, with judges from South West in Bloom equally impressed, handing Ilfracombe the coveted gold award.

After missing out in 2013, the town reclaimed the gold this summer, capturing judge's votes with a selection of vibrant displays.

The recognition didn't stop there, as several of the town's community organisations were also awarded for their own personal efforts – notably the Cow Green Community Garden receiving outstanding status.

Ivan Frances, Ilfracombe in Bloom Chairman, said he was ecstatic at the town's achievement, having last been awarded the gold back in 2012.

He said: “Obviously I'm over the moon. The volunteers have worked so hard and tirelessly to get the town up to speed, and the town council, district council and the members of the Ilfracombe in Bloom team have really pulled all the stops out. The blooms were marvellous.

Mr Frances stressed the award was not just for the town, but for locals and tourists on their UK family holidays, who enjoy the bright displays dotted around.

He said: “Primarily it's for the town, it's for the visitors and it's for the people that live here. I think people that come on holiday to Ilfracombe they look for the displays. It's something that the town is well known for.”

“Everywhere you looked in Ilfracombe there were flowers outside shops, in the baskets, in people's gardens. We are a force to be reckoned with.”
