Nature activities for the whole family
Our parks are fantastically situated for making the most of nature. From acres of woodland to beaches on your doorstep, there’s plenty of wild space for everyone to enjoy, and so many fun things you can do as a family.
We’ve rounded up some nature games and craft ideas to get everyone involved, connected and back to nature this holiday.
Swatch search
Grab a box of felt pens or crayons and make yourself a little swatch book of natural colours. Head out into nature – whether it’s the woods or the beach – and get everyone to forage for objects that match the colours. Think leaves, flowers, shells, anything goes! Tick the colours off your list as you find them.
You could even make multiple swatches in different colours so everyone has their own to try and complete first! Remember, intact shells should always be left on the beach (for the sea creatures who use them as homes) and wild flowers should never be picked - leave them for the bees.
Colourful collages
Fallen leaves are the perfect medium for making beautiful nature pictures. Gather up as many different shapes, sizes and colours as you can, then have a crafting session back at your caravan or lodge.
The best bit is that you can do this throughout the year, as all the colours change!
Bird bingo
Robins, black birds, maybe even some birds of prey, you never know what you’ll spot on a walk around our parks. No bonus points for gulls, unfortunately, they're everywhere! Just make sure you keep an eye on your chips!
Make a list of British bird species and then keep your twitcher eyes and ears peeled, ticking them off as you spot them. You could even download an app to help you identify them.
Beach art
While you’re whiling away the hours on any of the glorious beaches close to our parks, you could try your hand at beach art. All you need to do is gather up some natural items and fashion them into something arty! Think seaweed for octopus legs, fashion fish out of smooth pebbles, or get stuck in and draw directly into the sand! Keep it 2D or go all out and create a 3D masterpiece out of driftwood.
Make it a friendly competition and have everyone make a family gallery, then judge the winning creation. Best one gets an ice-cream!
We’d love to see your masterpieces and wild outings this holiday. You can send your photos to marketing@johnfowler.co.uk or tag us in your social posts and you might even see your work or memories feature on our social media! Inspire other families to get close to nature and have fun this holiday.
