North Devon Hot Spots
North Devon is well-known for its sandy beaches, areas of outstanding natural beauty and stunning coastline. It's hard to know where to start when you visit!
We've rounded up 5 top spots to enjoy when staying in the area:
1. Woolacombe beach
Famous for its long stretch of sand and fantastic surfing opportunities, Woolacombe is a favourite beach amongst locals and visitors alike. With rolling dunes, cute cafes, bars and handy surf shops, Woolacombe is a great option for a long day out, enjoying nature and water activities. Dogs are welcome on leads past Mill Rock during the high season and across the beach during low season. There are a number of surf schools offering lessons and kit hire, as well as companies running coasteering and other outdoor activities.
2. Westward Ho!
Yes, the exclamation mark is part of the name! Westward Ho! beach offers visitors exciting amusement arcades, ice-cream shops and of course a stunning beach to relax on. There's so much to explore, whether you want a break in nature or a traditional seaside experience. There are plenty of restaurants and bars, making it a popular place to dine out, with fresh, locally caught fish on the menu.
3. Valley of the Rocks
Situated in the vacinity of Lynton and Lynmouth, Valley of the Rocks is a breath-taking outcrop of rocky vistas along a beautifully blue coastline. Strap on your walking boots and have a careful clamber up to visit the herds of goats that roam the area. If you fancy being adventurous, you can take the steep, winding path between the two towns. We won't blame you for taking an enjoyable ride back up on the funicular Cliff Railway though - for just a small fee. A great way to explore some of the famous South West Coast Path.
4. Watermouth Cove
An idyllic cove full of bobbing boats and stunning views out to sea, Watermouth even has it's own quaint little cafe - Storm in a Teacup - constructed from an old boat! Enjoy a short walk along the top of the cove where you can look out onto the Bristol Channel and explore the small ruined building with a view. Opposite the cove you can discover all the family fun of Watermouth Castle with its rides and attractions. A perfect place for paddle boarding, rock pooling or wild swimming, Watermouth is not one to be missed.
5. Lundy Island
Accessible for a day trip via a number of local wildlife-watching boat tours and the famous Oldenburg, Lundy Island is truly a national treasure. Home to seal and puffin colonies, it's a widlife-enthusiasts dream! Day trips on the Oldenburg can be booked online and, for the more adventurous, longer trips can be booked with camping on the island an extra option. Many boat tours run from Ilfracombe harbour, just a 15 minute drive away from our two North Devon parks.
All these amazing advenutres can be experienced if you stay at either our Sandaway or Combe Martin Beach holiday parks.
