Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Devon youngsters

If you’ve stayed at South Bay Holiday Park during your caravan holidays in Devon, you may have caught glimpse of a magnificent sailing vessel in Brixham’s harbour.

‘Leader’ is a 19th century, 105ft Brixham trawler, and Trinity Sailing have teamed up with local businesses to give 12 local youngsters the chance of a once-in-a-lifetime trip onboard.

Anyone across Devon between the ages of 18-25 can apply for a place on the vessel for the prestigious International Tall Ships Races.

Sailing out of Amsterdam on June 29th, the crew will spend 4 days along the Dutch coast getting to know the vessel before heading to Harlingen in the Netherlands. Here, hundreds of traditional vessels from across the world will meet and sail to Fredrikstad, Norway.

Applicants are advised to apply by submitting a written application. Anyone who feels they have gone above and beyond helping others, or have achieved their own personal goals will be considered for the trip. Alternatively, people can recommend others who they feel are deserving of a place.

Trinity Sailing works alongside a range of youth organisations, from social services and community groups to colleges and schools. Director Toby Russell said: “Sail training, and the Tall Ships Races, is about much more than learning to sail.

“It is a true adventure and the experience can inspire young people, whatever their background, broadening their horizons and motivating them towards new goals. For some it is genuinely life-changing.

“As well as having a great deal of fun, the Tall Ships helps all of the young participants discover hidden strengths and uncover new talents as they learn the true value of working as a team.

“At each stop en route there is a carnival to welcome the ships and their crews. You are given time to explore the various locations and hop on board some the world’s most impressive sailing vessels.”
